Starting October 1, 2026, Alberta adds a $14 environmental fee to every eligible solar panel sold into the province. The fee is administered by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) and funds the collection and recycling of end-of-life solar panels. It is province-wide and applies to all Alberta solar installations from that date forward.

The fee applies to panels sold into Alberta on or after October 1, 2026. Booking your assessment now and getting your project on the books before that date can help you avoid the new per-panel line item. If solar already makes sense for your roof, this is a clean window to move.

Will my solar panels end up in a landfill?

Under the new ARMA program, no. A modern solar panel is mostly aluminum, glass, silicon, and small amounts of copper and silver, all of which are recyclable. The program creates the collection and processing infrastructure to recover those materials at end of life. Today's panels are warrantied for 25 years and most still produce useful power at year 30, so panels installed in 2026 will not need recycling until the 2050s.

Door-to-door solar follows the seasons. Calgary in winter, Edmonton spring through fall. Most reps are pure commission. Right now several Edmonton crews are impersonating EPCOR and government rebate officers. EPS has an active file, number 260415852.

If a stranger knocks asking about your power bill

Politely do not show your bill. It has your account number and tariff on it.
Take their business card. Never sign at the door on the first visit.

“Discover” a fake rebate

The rep brings the price down to where it should have been. You feel like you got a deal. You did not.

Balloon financing

Low year-one payment resets in year two. CEIP is flat 6.0% fixed for the full term. Anything “cheaper” needs the fine print read twice.

Red flag #3: The unpermitted install

Worse than bad pricing. The crew drills, wires, energizes, and leaves. No permit ever filed. You inherit three problems at once.

EPCOR does not door-knock for solar. There is no Alberta residential solar rebate in 2026. The previous program ended in 2019.

CEIP is a loan repaid through your property tax bill. Nobody from CEIP knocks on doors. Ask for ID, then call the utility on the number from your actual bill.
