The charger on the wall
The unit itself is the part everybody shops on price. It is also the smallest part of the job. A 48 amp Level 2 charger is what goes on the wall, and the work behind it is what decides whether it still holds up in five years.

A DCC-9 or a DCC-10 controller lets a full size charger share an older service instead of forcing a service upgrade. When it fits, it saves $2,000 to $4,500. I check for it before I quote you an upgrade.

Before you book
Do you actually need a panel upgrade for your EV charger?
Honest answer: probably not. A Level 2 charger pulls 32 to 48 amps continuously, and whether your panel takes that comes down to a load calculation under the Canadian Electrical Code, not a guess.
You likely do NOT need one
200A service, or spare capacity on 100A
200A service, you almost certainly have room. On 100A, if the calculated load leaves headroom, a straight 48A circuit works. If it is tight, a load controller solves it for a fraction of an upgrade.
You might need one
Maxed 100A with big loads already
Older 100A home with an electric range, dryer, AC, and hot tub already on the panel? The load calc may leave no room. Then you choose: a load controller to share capacity, or a 200A upgrade to add it.
One real 100 amp house
Same 200 amp scale on both bars. A 100 amp service with an electric range and dryer already on it calculates out around 67 amps used, so 33 amps is what is left. A 48 amp charger is a continuous load, which code counts at 125 percent, so it wants 60 amps. That is 27 amps short.
Whichever route your load calc points to, the work is permitted and inspected. A handyman circuit can void your insurance and fail at resale.
Skip the Panel Upgrade
Save $2,000 to $4,500 with a DCC Controller
Older Edmonton home on a 100A panel? You have three ways to feed a charger. Two of them skip the upgrade.
DCC-9 On/Off Controller
How it works: When your home's load spikes (oven, dryer, AC, hot tub all at once), the DCC-9 cuts the charger entirely, then resumes automatically when load drops.
Tradeoff: Charging stops completely during peak draw. Hot tub runs two hours, your EV pauses two hours.
Best for: Predictable evening loads, single-EV homes, overnight charging when most loads are off.
DCC-10 Throttling Controller
How it works: On a load spike, the DCC-10 throttles the charger down (48A to around 30A) instead of cutting it off. Your EV keeps charging through dinner, hot tub, dryer, and AC all at once. Installed in your existing panel, commissioned same day as your EV charger.
Tradeoff: Slower charge during peak draw, but never zero. Full battery every morning.
Best for: Daily drivers, two-EV homes, heavy evening loads. The $400 difference pays for itself the first morning you'd otherwise leave half-charged.
Panel upgrade to 200A
How it works: Typical when the car is the reason. Service mast, meter base, new panel, EPCOR coordination, drywall repair. Full range across all panel work is $2,200 to $6,500 and up.
Tradeoff: No need for the extra capacity elsewhere (hot tub already in, no second EV planned)? The DCC route saves $2,000 to $4,500.
Best for: Capacity you will actually use later. We tell you straight on the consult. Sometimes the panel upgrade is still the right call.

An Alberta Safety Codes Council inspector verifies the install passes CEC. Their stamp is the only document that legally certifies the work. If we cut a corner, they catch it before you ever would.

Before you chase the lowest number
A cheap charger install is the one you find out about when the breaker keeps tripping.
A charger is a continuous load on your panel, not a plug-in appliance. When someone underprices the install, it is one of these three corners, and all three end up back on your service, not their invoice.
A cheap quote often skips the permit and inspection to shave the price. Then the system is uninspected, uninsurable, and a problem the day you sell the house. Every job I do is permitted and inspected under my licence #13824. That row is not optional.
The low bidder wins the sale, then hands your garage to whoever is cheapest that week. Quality is a coin flip and the warranty call goes to a head office out of province. My own crew does every job, and the warranty call comes to my cell.
A circuit quoted over the phone with no site visit is a guess. Undersize it and the breaker trips every time the car and the dryer overlap. Oversize it and you paid for a service upgrade the load calculation never asked for. I read the panel first, so the circuit fits the house.

Level 2 vs a Standard Outlet
A 240V Level 2 charger adds 25 to 50 km of range per hour depending on your car. A standard 120V plug gives you 6 to 8 km. Most EV owners top up overnight and wake up with a full charge every morning.
