Why the years barely move

Low end of $2.25 per watt pays back sooner, top end of $3.00 later. The timeline barely moves with system size, because the price and the power both scale with the array. Size changes the dollars, not the years.

I hold today's grid steady for 25 years, the same way I hold today's power rate steady in the dollar figures above. The older 490 g table still floating around would let me print a number about 46% bigger. I do not use it.

The sources, and the coal note

Alberta burned its last coal in June 2024 and the grid keeps getting cleaner, so the real tonnage will land under this. Grid factor: ECCC National Inventory Report 1990 to 2024, Annex 7 Table A7-10. About the $14 Alberta panel recycling fee

What is this fee?

A province-wide environmental fee of $14 per eligible solar panel, starting October 1, 2026. Administered by ARMA, the same body that handles tire and electronics recycling in Alberta.

Is this a Raydn markup?

No. I collect it at cost and remit it to the program. I show it separately on every quote so you can verify exactly what you are paying.

Where does the money go?

ARMA states the fee funds collection points, the recycling process, and the development of recycling infrastructure for end-of-life panels in Alberta.

Why is timing relevant?

The fee applies to panels sold into Alberta on or after October 1, 2026. Projects with panels ordered and on inventory before that date can avoid the new line item.

Does this change whether solar is worth it?

On a typical residential system, the fee is around 1 percent of total project cost. The payback math, financing, and equipment warranties are all unchanged.
