Summer carries winter, and the yearly total is what matters, not one month. Both bars are the same roof, 9.56 kW, real metered production, and December is drawn at a minimum width so it stays visible at 0.22 percent of July. Cost per backup day vs a generator
A generator burns fuel for every hour it runs. A battery does not. What a generator costs per day depends on your propane price and how many days your power is out, and we know neither about your house. So there is a real number on one side only.

The battery figure is its published price midpoint divided by 3,650 days, so ten years of every day. The generator side is blank on purpose. It used to read $42.00 a day, which charged fuel for all 365 days while amortizing the battery over the same 365. That is not the same kind of number, so it came out. Bring us your propane price and we will do it properly on a site visit.

Solar plus battery: where the money actually is
Here is the part a battery pitch usually skips. On a two tier Solar Club plan you import and export at the same rate inside the same season. High season is 35.00 cents both directions. Low season is 5.90 cents both directions. So a battery does not earn you a spread on the energy.

Rates from the Solar Club July 2026 fact sheet, read 26 August 2026. EPCOR calls its own delivery charges largely fixed, so self consuming does not dodge much of those either. If someone quotes you a battery on savings math, ask them which rate they used in each direction.

Per usable kWh, divided straight out of our own posted prices above: EG4 WallMount $378 to $434, Pylontech US5000 $548 to $636, Powerwall 3 plus Expansion $963 to $1,148, Powerwall 3 on its own $1,185 to $1,407. EP Cube is deliberately not on that list, because it is modular 9.9 to 19.9 kWh and its price range moves with its capacity, so one number for it would be invented. These are Raydn installed prices, not an industry survey. Ask any other installer to do the same division on their own quote.

This tool used to print 5.0 kWh for it, which was the sticker number rounded up, so it came down. EG4 WallMount 14.3 kWh, Tesla Powerwall 3 13.5 kWh, Powerwall 3 + expansion 27 kWh, EP Cube 9.9 to 19.9 kWh. essentials baseline per day, fridge + fan + lights + router.Here is the arithmetic so you can check it yourself. Fridge 150 W for 24 h is 3.60 kWh. Furnace fan 500 W for 8 h is 4.00 kWh. LED lights 60 W for 8 h is 0.48 kWh. Router 15 W for 24 h is 0.36 kWh. That adds to 8.44 kWh, and those are the same four wattages the appliance buttons in this tool use, so the number and the buttons can never disagree. It is this tool's own assumption. It is not a published figure from a utility or a regulator, so do not treat it as one. Your load slider adds appliances on top of it, and your own last 12 months of utility data is the only number that is actually yours. This page used to also print an idle draw of 0.8 to 1.2 kWh per hour here. That was unsourced, and at 24 hours it works out to 19 to 29 kWh a day, which contradicts the 8.44 kWh above it, so it is gone.

peak sun hours per Edmonton day, at 0.80 system derate.Peak sun hours are a modelling input, so here is a measurement instead. My own 9.56 kW Edmonton roof has produced 31,581 kWh in the 47 months since September 2022. That averages about 22 kWh a day across every season, not the 32 kWh a day this page used to print. Best month was 1,358 kWh in July 2026. Worst was 3 kWh in December 2025. So yes, solar refills a battery during a summer daytime outage. In a December outage, plan as though it does not. Never size backup off an average day.

continuous discharge rating, the ceiling on what you can run at once.Powerwall 3 handles 11.5 kW continuous (whole home including EV charger and heat pump), and the expansion unit rides on that same inverter. Pylontech US5000 is 100 A continuous at 48 V, so 4.8 kW, with a 15 second surge rating of 121 to 200 A. This tool said 2.4 kW until August 2026, which was wrong by half and understated what the cheapest bank can actually carry. EG4 WallMount 8 kW and EP Cube 7.6 kW are still vendor figures, not datasheet checked. Exceed the peak and the battery trips offline. Pylontech US5000 datasheet

measured capacity loss at -10°C. Colder than that is extrapolated, and past -20°C the bank stops.Battle Born measured an LFP bank delivering about 80% of its room temperature energy at 13 to 18°F, roughly -10°C, averaged across three discharge rates. The same test could not recharge that bank at all at that temperature, because it sat below the 25°F charge limit the BMS enforces. This tool now runs a straight line from full capacity at room temperature through that measured 80% at -10°C, which works out to 0.667 points per degree, and it stops returning a number past -20°C. In an unheated Edmonton garage the real risk is not just holding less, it is a battery that refuses to charge. The temperature control now drives the runtime engine. Every hour, day, EV charge and hot tub figure on this page is recalculated at the temperature you set, and past -20°C the page says none instead of printing a number the bank cannot deliver. Runtime is usable capacity at rated depth of discharge, multiplied by the cold derate for the temperature you set. The cold model is a straight line between two measured points, full capacity at room temperature and about 80% at -10°C. Past -20°C it reports a stop, and nothing here charges below 0°C.
