Door-to-door and high-pressure sales operations often anchor $3.50 to $4.00 per watt because they carry heavy commission and marketing costs baked into your price. Same panels, same inverters, much higher $/W. That gap is the single biggest reason to get a quote from a local licensed contractor before signing anything at your door.

Does a lower cost per watt mean lower quality?

Not necessarily. A lower $/W on a big simple roof is just economies of scale, not cut corners. What matters is that the installer is a licensed contractor pulling real permits with a Master Electrician on the job. Cheap AND unpermitted is the danger. Cheap because your roof is easy to work on is a good thing.

What is included in the cost per watt?

A proper quote's $/W should include panels, inverters, racking, wiring, the electrical permit, the EPCOR Micro-Generation submission, city inspection coordination, and the meter swap scheduling. If a quote looks cheap per watt, confirm the permit and Micro-Gen work is included and not billed as a surprise later.

How do I use $/W to compare quotes?

Take each quote's total installed price, divide by the system size in watts, and compare the $/W directly. Then confirm each quote includes permits and Micro-Gen work, uses EPCOR-approved inverters, and comes from a licensed contractor. The lowest $/W from a properly licensed installer with permits included is almost always your best deal.
