What makes off-grid and cabin solar different

There is no utility line to lean on out here. The battery bank and inverter are not an upgrade, they are the whole system.

The difference between a city roof and a remote site is one thing: whether the grid can hold your power overnight.

Off-grid sizing starts by adding up what you run in a day, in kilowatt hours. These are typical planning figures I start from and then confirm at your site. Your own numbers will be different, which is the reason I come out and look.

Electric water heating is usually the figure that changes the whole design. Move it to propane and the battery bank gets a lot smaller and a lot cheaper.

Why the month matters

Sizing the array off summer sun is the single most common off-grid mistake I get called out to fix. A system that carries you in July and dies in January was sized against the wrong month. Monthly figures from Natural Resources Canada, Edmonton, south facing at latitude tilt.

Small enough that the generator can cover the bad week instead of a bigger bank.The gap between those two array numbers is 0.6 kW of array. That is what sizing against the wrong month costs.

December and June yield come from the Natural Resources Canada photovoltaic potential table for Edmonton, south facing at latitude tilt. 58 kWh per kW in December, 120 in June. Planning figures. Your site, your shading and your real usage still decide the design, which is why I come out and look.

Why the sizing is the entire job

Generator integration usually rounds it out, so on the one stretch of bad weather a year, you have a backup path instead of sitting in the dark. Getting this sizing right the first time is the entire job. Getting it wrong means a system that looks fine on paper and fails the first hard week of winter.

What it costs, and why it costs more than a grid-tied roof

I will not sugarcoat this. Off-grid and battery systems cost more than grid-tied solar, because storage and backup are not free.

That is the whole reason off-grid costs more. Not markup. You are buying the thing a city roof gets handed for free. Rough ranges below, plainly hedged.

These are ranges, not quotes. Only 5 percent GST applies, since Alberta has no PST, and there is no fake rebate baked into any number I give you.

Why off-grid costs more than a city roof

A grid-tied home system skips the battery bank entirely and leans on the utility grid as free overnight storage. Off-grid and cabin systems cannot do that, so you are paying for panels, a battery bank big enough to matter, a proper inverter, and often a generator integration on top.

Why I will not give you a firm number yet

Every property's usage, distance, and terrain is different, and I only give a firm number after I understand your actual loads and, ideally, see the site.

No active Alberta solar rebate in 2026, off-grid or otherwise. CEIP is financing, not free money.

Off-grid and cabin solar has no utility safety net if something is installed wrong. So a licensed Master Electrician doing the work himself is not a nice-to-have. It is the whole point.

Who actually shows up, and who answers later

I run every job personally, no subcontractors handed the tricky remote sites while I stay in town. If a battery bank needs a check next winter or a generator transfer switch acts up, I am the one who answers the phone and the one who drives out.

Do I need batteries for a cabin solar system?

If there is no grid connection at the property, yes, batteries are not optional, they are the system. Without a utility to draw from at night or on a cloudy stretch, the battery bank and inverter are what actually keep your lights and fridge running. Even cabins with a bit of grid access often add batteries anyway for backup during outages. We size the bank to your real draw, not a one-size number, and pair it with generator integration so you always have a backup path if the weather does not cooperate.

Can solar run a detached garage or shop?

Yes, and it is one of the more straightforward off-grid style jobs we do. A detached garage or shop usually needs lighting, some plugs, maybe a compressor or a heater, and that load profile is easy to size correctly once we know what tools you actually run. Depending on distance from the house panel, it can make more sense to run solar and battery to the garage directly instead of trenching power out to it. Either way it gets a licensed install and a proper electrical panel, not an extension cord and a prayer.

Will off-grid solar work through an Alberta winter?

It works, but winter is exactly why sizing has to be honest instead of optimistic. Short daylight and lower production months mean an off-grid system needs either a bigger battery bank, a properly sized generator for backup, or both, to carry you through the darkest stretch of the year. Panels themselves handle cold fine and snow sheds off angled glass. The failure point is not the panels, it is a battery bank or generator plan that was undersized to make the quote look cheaper. We size for the worst week of the year, not the best one.

How do I get a quote for my cabin or off-grid property?
