What a battery actually keeps on

A battery does not usually run your whole house in an outage. It runs the things that matter: furnace fan, fridge, internet, lights, and a few outlets. That is what keeps a family safe and warm through an Edmonton outage.

Yes, if it is sized for it. A home battery keeps your essentials, furnace fan, fridge, some lights and outlets, running through an outage. How long depends on the battery size and what you are running. A single battery typically covers essentials overnight; multiple units or a paired generator extend that through a multi-day cold snap.

How long will a battery power my house?

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Usually yes. AC-coupled retrofits like a Powerwall bolt onto most existing grid-tied solar without replacing the inverter. Some setups need a hybrid inverter swap, which is a bigger job. Either way the electrical permit applies, and if you export, EPCOR needs notification of the change under the Micro-Generation Agreement.

Do I need solar to have a battery?

No. A battery can be installed for backup alone and charged from the grid, giving you outage protection without panels. But pairing it with solar is where it shines in Alberta: the panels recharge the battery during a daytime outage, extending your resilience well beyond what a grid-only battery gives you.

Where these numbers come from

On the temperature question, Tesla publishes an operating range of -20°C to 50°C for Powerwall 3, Powerwall 3 datasheet, read 27 August 2026. Edmonton goes colder than -20°C outdoors, which is the actual reason the unit goes in an attached garage or on a sheltered wall rather than hung in open air. That is a design decision, not a sales line. Worth being straight about one thing: the same datasheet only publishes a performance derate above 40°C, so the winter capacity margin we size in is our own field practice with lithium in this climate, not a number Tesla publishes.
