Where the power actually goes on an Edmonton house

Your load gets served first, straight off the array. The surplus leaves through the bi directional meter and EPCOR credits it back to you under the Micro Generation Regulation. That is the whole trick. You are not storing power, you are using the grid as the battery.
December. The roof covers part of it and the grid covers the rest.

Decode my bill, one line at a time
Settled statement, June 3 to July 2, 2026. My own house. Every line below is on your bill too, usually under a different name. That is the part the industry counts on you not checking.
Power I sent out 771 kWh exported to the grid
This is everything my roof made that the house did not use right then. It goes out to the grid and the meter counts it.
On your own bill Look for a line that says Microgeneration, Export, or Energy Delivered to Grid. It is a kWh number, not a dollar number.
Power I pulled back 267 kWh imported from the grid
Nights, cloudy days, and any hour the house used more than the roof was making. Solar does not stop you buying power. It changes the net.
On your own bill Look for Energy Consumed, Electricity Used, or just kWh Used. Almost every bill puts this near the top.

This is the number that actually pays you. I sent out 771 and bought back 267, so I genuinely sold 504 kWh that month.

Every kWh I export is credited at this rate. Same roof, same sunshine, half the rate, half the cheque. This is the single line most people never check.

The power I did buy still costs money, at the same rate. Nobody escapes this line and any company telling you otherwise is selling, not calculating.

What an out of province installer gets wrong here
Not opinions. These are the five that cost Edmonton homeowners real money.
Racking rated for our snow, not for Ontario's
Edmonton ground snow load is not a detail you copy off a template from another province. I size the rail spans and the attachment pattern for what actually lands on your roof in February. An array that flexes under snow load kills its own microinverters over about a decade.
The permit and the microgeneration file are two different things
You need an electrical permit and a separate microgeneration approval through your utility before you are legally exporting anything. I have watched out of province crews finish an array and leave the homeowner to figure out the second one alone.
A warranty is only worth the truck that shows up
Twenty five year panel warranties are standard and mean very little on their own. The question is who drives out when one microinverter drops offline in year seven. If the installer was a sales office in another province, that answer is nobody.
The lockable AC disconnect is not optional
2024 Canadian Electrical Code, Section 64. Lockable, labelled, and where a firefighter can find it in the dark. It is the single fastest way to tell whether the person quoting you has actually wired a system or just sold one.

Where these numbers come from
The Section 64 requirements here are not house style. Alberta Municipal Affairs publishes the interpretation, STANDATA 18-ECI-064, Section 64 renewable energy systems, read 27 August 2026, and there is a plain language walkthrough of the section in the Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Section 64. The interconnection side is regulation too. The Alberta Micro-generation Regulation is what your distribution facility owner is applying when it approves or sends back a micro-generation application.
