What a matched LED pole head saves

Wide on purpose. The low end is honest: matched on MEAN lumens against a 400 W pulse start, the LED can land near 400 W. Anyone quoting you 70 percent outdoors is sizing against the number on the box.

Pole work is bonding work

The safety argument, written plainly, because cheap crews skip it

Rule 30-1024(1), bonding within 2.5 m of grade

Metal within 2.5 m of grade gets bonded by a separate bonding conductor sized per Table 16. The code wording moved from grounded to bonded for a reason.

Ground it to an electrode instead of bonding it and a fault at the top energizes the conductor running the whole way down. That is somebody getting hurt while leaning on it.

Branch circuit voltage limit on 600Y/347 V is Rule 30-102. Damp and wet location luminaires are 30-316 to 30-322. Scope of permanent outdoor floodlighting on poles is 30-1000. Switching is 30-1020. Grounding and bonding is 30-1022 to 30-1028.

Climbing steps are 30-1030. Enclosed or fenced outdoor installations are 26-008 and GFCI on outdoor receptacles within 2.5 m of grade is 26-704. Verify against the edition in force, which I do before it goes in a proposal.

Most Alberta commercial lot lighting is 347 V, so the indoor bulletin reaches your lot too.

Four variables that move an outdoor number more than the fixture

Pole and base condition

A pole with a rusted base or a cracked handhole is not a lighting job any more. I would rather find that on a walkdown than in a change order.

The buried feeder you cannot see

Direct buried conductors of unknown age and unknown depth feeding the lot. Sometimes fine, sometimes the actual project.

Lift access

What can reach the pole, over what surface, and whether it can be there during business hours. This moves the labour number substantially and it is site specific.

There is no LED rebate in Alberta right now

Energy Efficiency Alberta was wound up in 2020. The Emissions Reduction Alberta Energy Savings for Business program is closed and fully allocated. SEMI is industrial only. If a competitor payback calculation has a rebate line in it, that payback is made up. My calculator has no rebate field, and that is deliberate.

The write off is real, though

Commercial lighting normally lands in capital cost allowance Class 8 at 20 percent declining balance, and Class 8 qualifies for the accelerated first year allowance through 2027. Talk to your accountant about that, not to me. I am an electrician.

The 347 volt trap, and why the cheap swap stops being cheap

Alberta STANDATA 24-ECB-030 says a luminaire with double ended lamps on a ballast rated over 150 volts to ground, disconnected and reconnected, counts as a new luminaire and needs disconnecting means. It extends that to energy conservation retrofits. Most Alberta warehouses and commercial buildings are 347 volt. So the cheap ballast bypass lands inside that sentence. A new fixture with no double ended lamps does not.

Field modifying a certified fixture voids its certification

A proper retrofit uses a certified retrofit product and a new label on every single fixture, per CSA C22.2 No. 250.1, and the retrofit kit has to be certified for the fixture it goes into per STANDATA 24-ECB-002. I price the label. Most low bids do not, and the building owner inherits that at insurance or resale time.

What I get asked on lots, yards and poles

Why will you not give me a price for my parking lot online?

Because the pole condition, the buried feeder, the lift access and the photometric layout move the number more than the fixture does. Anybody quoting your lot off a web form is guessing and will make it up in change orders. What I will publish is the energy and the maintenance you stop paying. The install number comes off a site visit.

Do I need full cutoff fixtures on my lot?

It depends which municipality you are in, and they genuinely disagree. Strathcona County and Sherwood Park require full cutoff on any fixture over 2,000 lumens, which is every commercial fixture. St. Albert requires it on all exterior lighting. Parkland County requires Dark Sky compliant product on anything needing a permit. Edmonton requires none of it. Full cutoff optics run about 19 percent more, so it is a real cost.

What does a 400 W metal halide pole light actually use?

About 458 to 465 W at the panel once the ballast is counted, not 400 W. It also holds only about 64 to 77 percent of its rated lumens in service depending on whether it is probe start or pulse start, so your lot is dimmer than it was designed to be.

Is a pole light retrofit really a permit job?

Yes. Edmonton's own commercial electrical permit page names lighting retrofits as permit triggering work, and defines maintenance as like for like replacement for preservation or upkeep, not improvement. Swapping a dead HID wall pack for an identical HID wall pack is maintenance. Converting HID to LED is an improvement. Half this market does these jobs with no permit and the building owner carries that.

What is CEC Rule 30-1024(1) and why do you keep mentioning it?

It requires metal within 2.5 m of grade to be bonded by a separate bonding conductor sized per Table 16. The wording moved from grounded to bonded because if pole equipment is grounded to an electrode and not bonded to the system neutral, a fault to the enclosure at the top of the pole energizes the conductor running down it. That is somebody getting hurt leaning on your light pole, and it is exactly what a cheap crew leaves behind.
